Except coloration all these population are identical in appearance, but vary slightly in DNA. The size of males ranges from 140 to cm in length; females are usually 80-140 cm. The weight of these animals ranges greatly depending upon their age and season.

Some animals in British Columbia and Alaska are creamy or bluish gray.
