Females reach sexual maturity at the age of 3-4 years and males about 5-7 years. The reproductive rate of these animals is very low, as females mate every second year only and if the food is unavailable they may abort the fetus or not mate at all.

This species mate in May or June and the cubs are born in January. The litter consists of 1-4 small, blind, hairless and helpless cubs. The mother may nurse them for up to a year and they follow her for 15-20 months and learn everything from her.
