These animals are highly territorial, adult males may cover a territory of 100 square miles, where several females live. These animals are solitary and when inactive utilize the bed sites, which consist of shallow depression in the forest leaf litter.

These animals are found only in North America, their favorite biomes are temperate forests and rainforests, chaparral, mountainous regions from sea level to 3000 m in elevation and taiga.
