There are usually 2-3 cubs in a litter; they stay with the mother for 17-20 months. When she is ready to mate again, the yearlings are forced to leave her. Mating season begins in May and the babies are born in January or February.

The females of this species reach sexual maturity at the age of 2 to 10 years depending upon living conditions. Intervals between litters are 2-4 years; they have a delayed implantation and if the food is scarce, they abort the embryos.
