They grow to be 50-80 inches long from nose to tail. Females first produce cubs at the age of 3-7 years, depending on food supply. Usually 2-3 cubs are born every second year and they stay with the mother for 15-20 months, but are weaned at 7-10 months of age.

Most wild males of this species weigh between 125 and 500 pounds, while females weigh 90-300 pounds. The weight depends upon their age, the season of the year, and how much food is available.
