Black Bears - Conservation Status
As the American Black Bears have been widely hunted for sport and now they are not so numerous, they are listed as endangered. And in some areas of the United States and Canada they are protected. Still these bears are abundant.

Black Bears - Problems
It is a well-known fact that the Bear's gall bladders and bile are used in the traditional Chinese medicine and that is why a lot of Bears are being killed constantly notwithstanding the prohibition of the governments. Besides the Bears' paws are served as luxury dishes in the smart restaurants of Taiwan for the practice of "junbu". They say the meat of the animal eaten gives you all the qualities of the Bear: strength, health and so on.
In such countries as Pakistan and India the small animals are sold to the circus as dancing Bears. As the milk of the Bears is also very healthy, in Asia and China the bears are kept in the cages for the sake of their milk. The only Bear that is not valued in Chinese medicine is the Giant Panda.
Black Bears - Rescue Organizations Aim
Most of the organizations that deal with protecting the wild animals aim at fighting all illegal trading. They try to change the people's beliefs by helping them understand that traditional medicine is the not the only method that helps them and that there are effective non-animal alternatives. By changing these beliefs, they hope to change the practices and subsequent demand for these products and, thus, lower the practice of illegal trading for animal parts. But, it is very difficult to make people understand this since they are sure in their thinking that this animal medicine cures all the diseases: from fever to heart attacks. American Black Bears are on the verge of the extinction and will disappear if this practice continues without change.
