Black Bears - Interesting Facts
The American Black Bears have been known to knock mountain goats from rocky ledges to kill them. The age of the Bears can be determined by cutting crosswise through its tooth, just like it is done with the trees, to find out their age. American Black Bears are known to attack commercial beehives sometimes. It is a well-known fact that seven hundred American Black Bears were killed in Canada in 1953 to provide bearskin hats for British soldiers in Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
Black Bears - Habitat Preservation
American Black Bears have already lost over 60% of their historical range. The loss of areas is mostly due to the human intrusion deep into the forests. There are not so many places that are left for the wild animals. Crucial components for the American Black Bear to survive include: adequate sources of food and water, denning sites such as rock crevices, hollow trees and dense vegetation, contiguous travel corridors with sufficient cover for protection from poachers, harassment, and associated dangers from human development.
Black Bears - Conservation Status and Future
The population of the American Black Bears is constantly decreasing and in California the bear is a game animal. In the year 1998 there were about 17,000-23,000 bears. This number is constantly changing.

The American Black Bear is a good factor to indicate the health of a territory. This species is a very important part of the natural heritage for aesthetic and ecological values. As American Black Bears have become an international commercial trade for selected body parts from bears, it has also become illegal to sell any body part of a black bear.
